How to Use a Pause in an Interview
A pause can signal control when it gives you a decision to make. It becomes awkward when it hides the fact that you do not know what the question is asking.
Use one short sentence
Try “Let me take the two parts of that question in order.” The sentence buys time, names the structure, and keeps the room with you. Do not fill the pause with a list of tools or a generic confidence claim.
Pause again before the result
After explaining the action, stop for one beat before the outcome. That beat separates what you did from why it mattered and gives the interviewer a natural follow-up.
